In New York, you're bound to find someone selling records on the side of the street. I stopped to dig through 3 crates which was mostly 80's R&B, Pop and whatever whatever. I found these four 12' singles which all reminded me of the late 80's when there was only one urban station in Houston (102.1 JAMZ) to hear these songs. The other alternative was Donnie Simpson on BET whose show was mostly R&B with a little bit of rap, stuff like Heavy D, M.C. Hammer and Oaktowns 357.

Al B. Sure - 1988, this dude right here was a lady killer. He originally was a back up singer for Heavy D and moved on to release his first project. Peep out his blue jean jacket, the ill convertible Mercedes, home girl in neon and the pour water on his face scene!

Nu Shooz - 1986, Most of the time you hear DJ's playing "I can't wait" which always works but I can't remember the last time I've heard a DJ play this track. Bring it back!

Tony Toni Tone - 1988, This was my first introduction to the Tony's. Early new jack sound with a nice groove and catchy chorus. Look at the hair on Raphael and the cameo by Sinbad playing the loser.

Oaktowns 357 - 1989, First made they mark as back up dancers for M.C. Hammer and the sisters got down, Hammer Time! This track has plenty of energy with the constant siren in the background and Hammer chanting "Here we go, Here we go....here we go". The blue Benz is looking nice with that ground effects kit.

The Corner @ The Tipping Point

March 21st was our 1st attempt at hosting an event titled "The Corner" @ The Tipping Point. Owner Thomas and myself visioned an event with an early start to the weekend nights, followed by an after party, think Pre-Game! A place where people could gather inside the store or out on "The Corner" and add some light to the inner city nightlife. A place where all types of faces are welcome. The start off was slow, but you know how folks have to be fashionably late. By 9pm "The Corner" was hit with a rush and folks mingled, socialized, shopped, grooved and enjoyed the free drinks. Music was provided by DJ Witnes and last minute guest who spontaneously hopped behind the decks, completing the audio ambiance! The night went so well that we are in preparations to have it every 3 months. Mark your calender for June 7th for the next installment of "The Corner".

Soooooooooo sorry for the slack on the blog! Been a little hectic this last 2 months. 1st things first, I got settled into my place in NYC, Neva' taking shorts cuz' Brooklyn's the Borough. It snowed a few times during February and I liked it, snowball fight, arrrh!

Houston, TX (01/14/07)—If you haven't heard by now, Thursday, January 31st is the last Rock Box--ever--at The Pro (903 Richmond, Hustletown)! We've decided to end the to this wildly popular weekly for a couple of reasons. Thanks to Metro, The Proletariat is the future site for a MetroRail station. Read the Houston Press for more on that. The other reason is because one of our favorite DJ Witnes is moving to Brooklyn, NY.

After going four years strong, Rock Box has chocked up tons of great memories, theme parties and special guest DJs (national and locals). Past guests include a virtual whos-who on the scene: Adam 12 (She Wants Revenge),14k and Devin The Dude, Debbie D (Avenue D), Caps and Jones, Oxy Cottontail, Prince Klassen, Bird Peterson, Empanadamn, Curtis Vodka, Purple Crush, Grimy Styles, Tittsworth, RadioClit, DJ Krames, Pase Rock, DJ Chill, Lil Keke, DJ Domo, DJ Mel, DJ Cat, Boys & Girls, Joe B, Kineka and the list goes on!

Witnes would like to thank everyone for supporting the night. To all those cool kids, booty shakers, party people, DJs, rappers, new media fiends, designers, photographers, promotion companies and many others who came together with their mix-match taste in music and made Rock Box so ghetto fabulous.

And many thanks to Denise Ramos, the bar staff, my partna Dayta and the Rock Box Crew (Gracie Chavez, Antonio (DIRB!), M.C. President Reko Trill, Squincy Jones, Stilletto, 7000ft tall). Couldn't have done it without you.

December has been non-stop and that's a good thing. Lots of corporate Christmas parties and events. This picture is from an employee Christmas party that Witnes did for Cafe Brazils. The kids were gettin' loose to the sounds. Cute! But why are they wearing make-up like it's Halloween?

Mr. Nick Nack is on his way to H-Town this week to turn Rock Box out! Dude is a highly respected DJ hailing out of the ATX and a genius for his Sound Craftsman Vol 1. project. Check out the Demo right hurrr!

He's sooper sick on production, cuts and a well rounded, solid DJ that can rock just about any crowd. Quickwits caught up with him for a mini interview to prepare you for this Thursday.

1. General info about yourself, How long you been DJ'n and how you would describe your style to folks?

I produce music, DJ and work on nerdy shit like Giga Crate. Damn, I feel hella old when I say this, but I have been DJing roughly 17 years.

2. Name some of the DJ's that inspired you to become DJ Nick Nack?

DJ Alladdin for sure. "Alladin's on a Rampage" was actually THE track that inspired me to start. Shortly thereafter, Primo for phrase cuts. West coast cats like Melo D and J Rocc for the blends. Cats like Spinbad inspired me to release quality stuff as much as possible. There are plenty more, but I will spare ya ;)

3. First 3 things that come to mind when you hear "Houston" and why?

1) Humidity. B/c your city is off the meter with it. You know what I mean!

2) Big, flat and spread out. "Oh man it's just right up the way" is a favorite false saying of most Houstonians. Sure if you understand that right up the way = a 10-20 min drive. ahahah

3) Rap a Lot Records. I grew up on Houston rap music in the late 80s. Cat's like Odd Squad, Convicts, The Terrorists, OG Style, Big Mello, Geto Boys, Scarface, etc... I think of Rap A Lot especially when I think of Houston, but even Texas. Their releases were all we really had on a major level in the early 90s Texas-wise.

4. If someone asked you, how come you don't spin records, how would you respond?

I do spin records all the time ;) At my house. a hahah. Naw, on the cool, I will always love and appreciate my vinyl collection. And shit, I still dig all the time (don't forget I am a producer too). But there is NO denying the benefits to tools like Torq, Serato, etc.. How else can I have access to thousands of songs in multiple genres all within a 4lb footprint?

5. Do you think Serato has been a positive thing for DJ's?

Yes and no. You see I come from the school where cats had to come up and pay dues. Part of which was record selection. These days mfers can just look on some blog or DJs playlist and get almost any song they want. It didn't used to be like that. Back in the day, you had to physically FIND shit. That weeded alot cats out, which IMO was/is a good thing.

On the other side of that coin, I think Serato is advancing things with regard to music selection, and party rocking. You can do custom remixes and play them the same night! I think today more than ever raw talent and skills really do matter. Just cuz you have 50k mp3s, doesn't mean I wanna listen to your ass.

6. Biggest pet peeve when you are DJ'n a set.

Anyone trying to talk to me for more than a couple of sentences. I mean shit, everyone hates cheese requests, but I hate people that wanna talk to me while I am in the groove. It's distracting and makes me loose focus.

7. Tell us about your latest project with Giga Crate.

About a month ago The Are sent us a another one of his projects. This time the concept was that he only used samples from The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson. 13 tracks and 21 minutes in length, after pumping it in the ride and keeping it on repeat, I told myself this is the one. He had asked us not to put up the entire project because some other plans were in the works. A month later and here you have it. 2 singles leaked featuring Oh No and Kay. Enjoy!

8 Questions with DJ I-P Freely

This Thursday DJ I-P Freely returns to Rock Box. We got the chance to ask homie a few questions to get you familiar with him and what's going on in his world.

1. Records or Serato? Why?
I'd have to say vinyl because there's something to be said about a DJ who actually puts down the effort of digging. However, being that it's impossible to compete with the MP3 DJ expect me to break and buy Serato.

2. One impacting memory from 1993.
Getting dissed by an employee at Footlocker when I asked for Pumas. I saw Digable Planets sportin' them on In Living Color but the the shoes hadn't quite hit Houston yet. The employees last memory of Pumas were the shits with fake fur on the shoes.

3. Opinion about DJ's that don't mix.
You're not a DJ if you don't mix. You simply play records for fun.

4. If some one from New York asked you about the party scene in Houston, how would you respond?
Badly segregated. Houstonians are too close minded.

5. One Hip Hop producer you would pick as most vital to the culture.
That's a very specific question. I'd have to say DJ Premier. He has always emphasized within himself what he wants to do for the culture through his sound. All of his music is very well calculated to serve a purpose for the culture.

6. Most memorable video on MTV between 1980-1990.
Man, I never had cable so that's a hard one for me. I do remember seeing Public Enemy's "Night of the Living Basheads" and thinking that was a great video.

7. 3 Words that describe I.P. Freely.

That boy DJ Platurn was down in Texas for an Austin and Houston mini tour. Platurn is a name to look out for when it comes to Oakland and the Bay Area. We got the chance to show Platurn that Southern hospitality and how we do things in Texas!

1. Tell the people a little about yourself. How long you been in the game? Your Crew? Any other things you’d like people to know.
Tall. Blanco. Music nerd. Dedicated. Yay Area. Oakland Faders. Started in ’94 geekin’ out watching Bay dj’s at wherehouse parties. Never said anything. Just watched. Inspired by balance and beer.

2. Who were some of the DJ’s that inspired you to become DJ Platurn?
First and foremost…Jam Master Jay. After that, Aladdin, Q-Bert, My dad, DJ Scratch from EPMD, Melo-D, All Bay Area DJ’s, Team Canada & my crew.

3. You just finished up a west coast tour “The Lookout Weekend Tour”, how was that?
Real fresh! A labour of love but one of the best things I ever did in my career. The tour was a testament to what we are capable of doing on the West, despite distance barriers and things of that nature. The West Coast is alive and jumping and pulling this off on the independent tip shows how solid our scene is out here.

4. You just did a show in Austin and tonight your in Houston, What kinda vibe are you feeling from Texas?
I fuckin’ love you guys. There really is nothing in the world like southern hospitality and G.W. does not speak for your state. The fact that Austin is your capital and being as liberal as it is says a lot about Texas culture. I love coming down here and the art and music scene is bubbling with some of the best out there. Don’t mess with Texas suckas!

5. You mentioned how The Bay and Texas have this connection. Music and culture, elaborate a little on that.
A big part of Oakland’s past has to do with people migrating from the south (mainly New Orleans and Texas) to work the docks in Oakland in the early 1900’s. There is and always has been a heavy southern influence in the Bay and in Oakland in particular. West Oakland(where the docks are) use to be a cultural haven in the Bay that consisted of a vivrant scene full of great Blues and Jazz venues and energetic neighborhoods and some of the best soul food you could experience outside of the South. It’s 2007 now and gentrification is one of the ugliest mothefuckers to ever come out of human nature, in both the O and Texas as well!

6. What can people expect next from DJ Platurn?
An EP on the way featuring a hand-full of incredible Bay Area artists vocalizing over some slap happy futuristic funk, more and more traveling and a full fledged Oakland Faders take-over in 2008! WORD!!!

7. Any last shout outs, closing statements, jokes, pranks?
DJ Witnes will kick your ass.

This month 002 Houston did a feature on Houston DJ's. You can read it online or pick it up around town if there are any left.

This Saturday... it's that time again for Dirty Honey! This is the 3rd night for this monthly that has taken off more than expected. For the 1st month the turnout was 300+, 2nd month 500, F it, September 1st lets do 700! The concept of Dirty Honey is not being done by anyone else in the city. A mix of 60's funk, soul, pop, rock and folks dancing all night. All I'm going to say is don't miss this shit!

Krames arrived in Screwston at 11am Thursday. We immediately went to grab some REALLY REAL TEX MEX FOOD at Papasito's. Fajita's, Brochette Scrimp and frozen margaritas. Ran around town a bit, coffee shop/internet biz, Whole Foods and of course The Fly Trap. Over at The Fly's we had a break to chief up and relax. Later on we grabbed some early dinner at Luby's to give Krames some fuel for the rest of the evening.

Later that night, Witnes, Bird Peterson and Dayta opened up the night. Krames hit the decks at 12:30am and by that time Dayta was awready lit. It was his birthday so it was only assumable that he would act a donkey. Krames brought the heaterz all night. It was literally a sweat box up in The Pro. Big ups to Krames for Rockin' Rock Box, V.A. was in the building SON! He showed Dayta and Wit how to throw it up!

The Are is on a roll! He contacted Quickwits today to keep us updated with his most recent project.

I started the marauders project early last year. I was in NY and heard a tribe joint from the Marauder album. I thought to myself it would be dope to take all the original Midnight Marauder samples and re-work them to make new joints. At first, it was crazy because all the tribe songs are so distinct that no matter what i did to the break, they all still sounded the same. Because of this, I was'nt getting it done as quickly as I wanted so After chopping a few tracks, I realized it would be even better to go deeper into the record they used and pull out different parts to flip. It worked out well because now you hear the tracks in a different way but it's still connected and "Manipulated"

Last week the Texas Capital was non-stop. The Austin annual SXSW conference is the place to be for spring break unless you prefer the MTV frat crowd. Wednesday kicked off with performances by Southern Intellect, Lower Life Form and Devin The Dude hosted by Pushermania (HoustonSoReal). Thursday was poppin' at the Puma/URB magazine party w/ dope DJ sets by DJ Platturn and A-Trak. Friday I dropped by the Fader fort to hear the sexy Amy Winehouse and kick it with My!Gay!Husband, Tony X, Cosmo Baker, DJ Eleven and the Chicago heads, Mr. Hollywood Holt and The Cool Kidz were in the building. Later I hit up Lake Austin for a free show by all the members of Public Enemy, excluding Terminator X (BOOOOO). Then it was off to the NASA party where Kid Sister, Flosstradamus opened up for Spankrock w/ Amanda Blank by his side setting the party off. Spankrock has the best stage presence and energy, hands down. Saturday Scion hosted another free show w/ Mickey Avalon and Ghostface Killa with The Rhythm Roots Allstars who brought smiles to my face the entire set. Not to mention the perfect weather. The live band element with Ghostface was the perfect colab....soooooo dope! And later that night was the grand finale with DJ Skratch Bastid who completely murdered it for 2 hours straight.

This last Thursday, Rock Box featured 14K of The Coughee Brothaz with a solid line up of DJ's; DJ Cipher, Dr. Knuckstable and Bobby Hinojosa. By 11pm there was awready' a nice crowd. Local rappers 3BN performed a short opening set that was perfect to warm up the stage, followed by small dj break from Wit. The place was still filling up. At 12:15am The President Reko Trill introduced 14k along with DJ Domo and Devin The Dude to the stage. The Coughee Brothaz were in the building and them boys killed it! For 27 minutes they did back to back tracks with the same energy from start to finish. DJ Domo was backing up 14k with the cuts here and there and the stage so full of smoke I got a contact. After the show they all stuck around while DJ Cipher closed the night out with all the right tracks to make you feel at home and proud to be a Houstonian. BIG SHOUT OUT to Head and everyone else that made the night pop off!!!
